Rifugio Monte Pelmo

Rifugio Monte Pelmo sits at 2,945m on the west face of Monte Pelmo in the Dolomites. You reach it from Fedare (1,320m) via the Fedare Valley in 3.5 hours, gaining 1,625m steadily through larch forest and alpine meadow. The final approach crosses scree and uses chains on steep sections. This is the standard access and the only practical route for most hikers. The hut occupies an exposed position that rewards the effort with direct views across the Pelmo massif and south toward the Civetta group.
The rifugio has 120 beds split across multiple rooms. Half-board (bed, dinner, breakfast) is standard; lunch packs are available. The kitchen serves regional Dolomitic food—strong on polenta, casunziei, and game. Showers are available (small fee). The hut opens year-round but is most reliable mid-June to late September; winter climbing brings occasional visitors but expect irregular staffing outside summer. A wood stove keeps the common room warm. Mobile signal is patchy.
Book directly by phone (+39 0436 75006) at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Weekday slots open up more readily, particularly in June and September. Confirm your arrival time when you call. The hut sits at a junction point for traverses—many hikers use it as a waypoint rather than a destination, so turnover is steady even in peak season.
