Rifugio Palafavera

Rifugio Palafavera sits at 1514m in the Valle Maira, a quiet valley in the Cottian Alps. The hut takes 2-3 hours on foot from the road head at Cartignano. Trail access is straightforward and well-marked. Most hikers use it as a base for day walks into the surrounding peaks or as a night stop on longer valley treks.
The rifugio runs 13 private rooms with shared bathrooms. Meals are served daily—expect simple, hearty food typical of the region. The hut operates year-round but confirms opening dates in winter. Staff speak Italian and basic English. Mobile coverage is reliable. There's no shower, but hot water is available. The main appeal is quiet hiking in an under-visited valley without the crowds of busier Provençal huts.
