Planinska Hut Merjasec

Planinska Koča Merjasec sits at 1535m in the Julian Alps and serves as a base for hiking in the Triglav National Park area. The hut is accessible from the Kranjska Gora valley. Most hikers reach it in 2–3 hours on foot from lower trailheads. The approach is non-technical but involves sustained elevation gain on a marked path. Snow blocks the route from November through April. Access outside summer requires winter mountaineering skill and current avalanche awareness.
The hut sleeps 8 people in simple dormitory-style accommodation. PZS manages the facility and provides basic cooked meals if you book ahead. There is no electricity or running water. The hut operates from June to September. Bring a sleeping bag, warm layers, and a headlamp. Weather changes fast at this elevation—afternoon thunderstorms are common in summer. The hut is a working base rather than a destination in itself; most visitors spend one night before pushing higher into the Alps.
Contact the hut directly by phone to book beds and arrange meals. Book at least 2–3 weeks ahead for July and August. Weekends fill quickly in good weather. Arrive by mid-afternoon to allow time to settle before darkness. Bring cash for payment and tips—card facilities are unavailable.
