Planinski Lodge na Gori Oljki

Planinski Dom na Gori Oljki sits at 725m on the Pohorje plateau, a low-altitude base for exploring Slovenia's northern forested mountains. The hut is accessible by car via a forest road from Maribor or Vitanje, though the final section is rough. Most hikers approach on foot from Vitanje (1.5 hours) or from lower trailheads in the Pohorje region. The location makes sense for traversing the broader Pohorje massif rather than as a destination summit hut.
The lodge is run by PZS and accommodates around 40 people in dormitories and a few small rooms. Meals are available on request; bring cash as card payments are unreliable. The hut has basic facilities: a warm stove, running water, and simple cooking. It operates year-round but is quietest from November to March. Weekend hiking clubs use the hut regularly, so dormitory space fills quickly on Saturdays. The plateau location means weather changes fast; fog and wind are common even when valleys are clear.
Book directly by phone with the hut keeper. Summer weekends (June to September) require booking at least 1 week ahead. Winter visits need confirmation of staffing. The hut is practical for longer Pohorje traverses or as a base camp for ridge walking, but not a comfortable overnight destination if you expect modern amenities. Bring your own sleeping bag unless you've arranged bedding in advance.
