Engelhornhütte

The Engelhornhütte sits at 1,901m in the Bernese Oberland's Engelhorn massif. From Hasliberg, take the postbus to Bidmi Wasserschöpf, then hike 2.5 hours on well-marked trails through alpine meadows to reach the hut. The approach is straightforward in summer but becomes exposed on steep sections when snow lingers into early June. Easier access exists from Meiringen via the Gental valley (3 hours), though this route involves more elevation gain.
The hut holds 50 beds in a mix of dormitory and smaller rooms. The kitchen serves three meals daily—book your evening meal in advance if you're arriving hungry. Water comes from the mountain spring; there's no self-catering kitchen, so you depend entirely on the hut's menu. The hut is SAC-affiliated and typically opens from mid-June through mid-October. Winter mountaineers sometimes use it outside these dates, but facilities are severely limited off-season.
Book your stay and meal requirements by email or phone at least one week ahead, longer during July-August when weekends fill quickly. The hut is popular with parties doing multi-day traverses through the Engelhorns and with hikers tackling the nearby Tälli pass. Weekday visits have far better availability than weekends.
