Untere Wusta

Untere Wusta sits at 1,272m in the Kiental Valley, roughly 8km south of Reichenbach im Kandertal. The hut makes sense as a base for walking the Kiental — a long, quiet valley that sees far fewer hikers than the Lauterbrunnen or Grindelwald valleys to the north. Most people walk in from Reichenbach (around 2 hours) or from Därstetten further up-valley (around 1.5 hours). Both routes follow the valley floor on well-marked paths; the terrain is rolling rather than steep. In winter the valley can be accessed by train and bus from Bern.
Untere Wusta is a working mountain farm as well as a hut. It offers basic accommodation with simple rooms and a small restaurant serving hearty food cooked from local ingredients. Overnight guests get dinner and breakfast. The hut is open year-round and works well for families or anyone wanting a quieter base for valley walking rather than high-alpine routes. Summer brings decent trail options up to higher meadows and passes, though those require more fitness than the valley walks.
Contact the hut directly to check availability and book. July and August are predictably busy, so book 4–6 weeks ahead for those months. The hut is small and can fill quickly. Off-season (October to April) bookings are easier to arrange, and spring and autumn walking in the Kiental is rewarding when the weather holds.
