Schwandalpe

Schwandalpe sits at 936m in the Appenzell Alps of eastern Switzerland, accessible from the village of Wasserauen via a 2-hour hike through beech forest and alpine meadow. The approach is straightforward and well-marked, making it a solid destination for a first alpine hut night or a mid-range day walk from the Säntis massif. The hut lies on the main hiking route between Säntis and the Appenzell countryside, so it draws steady foot traffic.

The DAV-managed hut has capacity for around 30 guests in mixed dormitories and a few private rooms. Meals are hearty Swiss fare—expect rösti, älplermagronen, and seasonal game in autumn. The kitchen serves dinner from 18:00 and breakfast from 07:00. Winter closures are common; confirm opening dates before you travel. Basic facilities include composting toilets and rainwater showers. The hut runs on minimal staff, so self-sufficiency helps—bring a headlamp and be ready for simple accommodation.

Book by phone directly with the hut; staff speak German and limited English. Summer weekends (June to September) fill quickly, especially during school holidays. Call two to three weeks ahead for July and August. The hut operates year-round but reduces services heavily in winter—contact ahead if you're planning a cold-season visit. Payment is cash only; there's no card facility.
