Berghaus Schwaben

Berghaus Schwaben sits at 1513m in the Säntis massif of Eastern Switzerland, making it a solid base for day hikes across the region's limestone ridges and meadows. Access by foot takes 2–3 hours from the valley towns of Appenzell or Wasserauen. The hut sits on well-marked trails that connect to the Säntis (2502m) in 3 hours, or down to the Appenzell Valley floor in 2 hours. Most hikers approach via Wasserauen and the Schäfler trail, a steady ascent through mixed forest and Alpine pasture.

The hut has basic mountain accommodation with dormitory beds and a handful of double rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals for dinner and packed lunches on request; bring your own breakfast or arrange it in advance. Water comes from the spring on site. The hut typically opens mid-May through October, though the shoulder seasons can be unreliable in poor weather—contact ahead to confirm. Facilities are simple: toilets, hand-washing stations, and a common room with a wood stove. This is working hut territory, not a tourist stop.

Book by phone directly with the hut—aim for 2–3 weeks ahead during July and August, when summer holiday weekends fill quickly. Weekend traffic is heavier than midweek.
