Außerwaldhütte

Außerwaldhütte sits at 2,437m in the Säntis Alps east of Appenzell Alps, serving as a base for ridge walks and scrambles across this underrated region. Reach it from Säntis (2,501m) in 2.5 hours via the Schäfler saddle, or from Appenzell valley in 4-5 hours through Alpine meadows. The hut stands on the main ridge between the Säntis and Schäfler peaks, giving direct access to cols and peaks without re-descent. Winter access requires skis or snowshoes.
The hut manages 40 beds in dormitory rooms. Evening meals feature regional specialties; breakfast is included with overnight stays. SAC members receive reduced rates. Water comes from a spring; the hut has no shower. Open mid-June through September and weekends in May and October, weather depending. The custodian lives on-site year-round and can advise on conditions. The setting is genuine hut life—no luxuries, reliable shelter, and straightforward Alpine hospitality.
Book well ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email; they keep a paper reservation book. Half-board is mandatory on Saturdays and peak summer weeks. The hut lies on a popular long-distance route, so arrive early in peak season or plan a weekday visit. Winter ascents are possible but require mountaineering experience and current snow/avalanche assessment from local sources.
