Fritzhütte

Fritzhütte sits at 1720m in the Appenzell Alps, above the village of Säntis. The hut is reached from Wasserauen (starting point for Säntis) in roughly 2.5 hours on well-marked trails, or from Appenzell in about 3 hours via Schwägalp. The route is straightforward summer hiking with moderate elevation gain.
The hut is a working Alpine dairy operation during summer months—you'll see cattle grazing nearby. It offers simple accommodation in dormitories and a few double rooms for up to 30 guests. Meals focus on regional fare cooked fresh; the hut serves hearty Alpine food rather than fine dining. There's no electricity, which keeps things quiet and authentic. Water comes from the spring. The hut opens late May and closes in September, depending on snow melt and autumn conditions. During peak season you'll share the space with families, school groups, and serious hikers using it as a base for day walks.
Book directly by phone or email as far ahead as possible. July and August weekends fill fast—book 4-6 weeks minimum for summer dates. The hut accepts cash and bank transfers but no credit cards. Arrive early on walking days if you haven't reserved, though summer afternoons are often full. The hut closes Mondays outside July and August.
