Kaiserjochhaus

Kaiserjochhaus sits at 2310m in the Appenzell Alps on the border between eastern Switzerland and Vorarlberg. You reach it from Säntis in 3 hours by hiking south across open ridges, or from the Appenzell valley in 4 hours via the Säntis massif. The approach is straightforward with no exposed scrambling, though the ridge terrain is exposed to weather. Most parties approach from the north via Schäfler (2021m), which makes a logical day from valley transport.

The hut is operated by DAV Sektion Leutkirch and houses about 80 people across mixed dormitories. Meals are available for residents and day visitors. Water comes from a spring nearby; the hut has basic heated facilities and no shower. The building feels functional rather than luxurious—typical of a working mountain hut on a major ridge. Opening season runs mid-May through October, though exact dates vary with snow cover and staffing. Check directly before planning winter visits.

Book by email or phone at least 2 weeks ahead for weekends in July and August. Mid-week stays outside peak season require less advance notice. The hut sits on a popular day-walk route from Säntis, so Saturday and Sunday lunchtimes are predictably busy. This is a working ridge hut: expect other hikers, wind, and genuine Alpine conditions. It suits walkers moving between valleys or climbing Säntis from the south.
