Gipfelhütte Alvier

Gipfelhütte Alvier sits at 2,343m on the Alvier massif in eastern Switzerland, commanding views across the Appenzell Alps. Reach it from Säntis region via the Säntis-Schäfler traverse, or approach from the Appenzell side. The hike from Säntis takes around 4–5 hours depending on your exact starting point. The final section involves scrambling on exposed terrain with fixed cables—this is not a walk. Winter access requires proper avalanche assessment and mountaineering skills.

The hut sleeps 24 in mixed dorms and small rooms. The guardian serves hearty meals (book ahead) and provides hot drinks and snacks throughout the day. Drinking water is available. The hut operates year-round, though winter visits must be arranged in advance and the building becomes self-service with no meals provided. The SAC manages the hut to high standards. Expect basic but solid Alpine accommodation—no showers, but functional toilets and washing facilities.
