Grießbachalm

Grießbachalm sits at 1475m in the Appenzell Alps, easily reached from the Säntis region. Most hikers approach from Schwägalp (1278m) or from villages in the Appenzell valleys. Plan 1.5 to 2 hours from Schwägalp on well-marked trails. The hut works as a day-trip destination or overnight stop on longer ridge traverses through the eastern Alps.

The alp operates as a simple mountain restaurant and basic overnight facility. Expect dormitory beds, hearty regional food, and drinks. The kitchen serves lunch and dinner; book dinner ahead when staying overnight. Water and toilets are basic but functional. Grießbachalm operates year-round, though conditions dictate actual accessibility in winter—check locally before traveling in heavy snow. Capacity is modest, around 20–30 beds.

Call ahead to confirm availability and book dinner. Phone contact is your only reliable option; email responses may be slow. Summer weekends and school holidays fill quickly, so aim to book 2–3 weeks ahead for July and August. Shoulder seasons (May–June and September) are less crowded. The hut sits in grazing country, so expect cattle and occasional dairy operations—part of the landscape here. Staff are accustomed to walkers but this is working alps terrain, not a tourist facility.
