Memminger Hut

Memminger Hütte sits at 2,242m in the Appenzell Alps, east of the Säntis massif. Reach it from Wasserauen (1,494m) via the Schäfler valley in roughly 3.5 hours, following a well-marked trail through alpine pasture. Most hikers approach from the north via Appenzell or Gais; the southern approach from Urnäsch works but involves more elevation gain. The hut sits on a major ridge crossing, so you'll see walkers heading east toward Säntis as well as those on regional traverses.
The DAV-managed hut has 90 beds in mixed and family rooms. Meals focus on hearty Appenzell food—expect simple soups, rösti, and cheese dishes rather than haute cuisine. A small shop sells snacks and supplies. Water comes from the mountain, so showers are limited. The hut operates year-round, though staffing is minimal November to March—check ahead before visiting in winter. Mobile signal is weak; bring a paper map.
Book direct with the hut by email or phone at least two weeks ahead, longer during school holidays (Christmas, Easter, summer break). July and August fill quickly; June and September are calmer. The hut is popular with day-walkers on weekends, so arrive early or stay a night to avoid crowds. The location is ideal for anyone on a multi-day ridge walk across eastern Switzerland.
