About
Kanzberghütte sits at 1820m on the Kanzberg, a grassy ridge in the Säntis massif east of Appenzell. The hut is a 2.5-hour walk from Säntis-Schwägalp (1498m) heading south, or 3 hours from Schäfler (1645m) via the Säntis ridge. Both routes are well-marked but exposed in bad weather. Winter access is possible but requires avalanche sense and good conditions.
The hut is run by the local SAC section and sleeps around 30 people in simple dormitory rooms. Evening meals and breakfast are available—order dinners by midday. The hut has a small shop selling energy bars and hot drinks. Toilets are basic outhouses. There is no running water or shower facilities; bring a water bottle or collect snow in winter. The hut is usually open May through October, with variable weekend service in winter depending on snow conditions and management availability.
Book 2–3 months ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut directly by phone or email before arriving, especially outside main season when staffing is unpredictable. Solo walkers and small parties can often find space on weekdays with shorter notice. The hut gets quieter from September onwards, though autumn weather is less stable. October can close abruptly if heavy snow arrives early.

The hut is staffed June to October; winter visits are possible but require advance arrangement and good snow conditions.

Evening meals and breakfast are available; the hut has no shower, drinking water, or flush toilets—bring a water bottle and use the outhouse.
The approach routes are straightforward and well-marked, but exposed ridges make them unsuitable in poor weather; fit day-hikers or mountain walkers are the right fit, not beginners.
