Leutkircher Hut

Leutkircher Hütte sits at 2,251m on the border between eastern Switzerland and Vorarlberg, Austria, in the Alpstein massif. Reach it from Säntis (2,502m) in 2.5 hours by descending south into Säntis Valley then traversing the ridge. From the Appenzell Alps side, approach via Schäfler or Säntis itself. The hut works as a basecamp for traversing the Säntis ridge system and accessing routes into the Appenzell and St. Gallen Alps.
The DAV Sektion Leutkirch operates a 60-bed hut open year-round. Expect basic mountain hut fare: soups, pasta, cheese, and bread. The kitchen serves hot meals at lunch and dinner. Showers are available—a rarity at this elevation. Dormitory beds dominate; limited single or double rooms exist. Water comes from a spring nearby. The hut has no electricity and runs on gas and wood heating. Cell reception is weak to absent.
Book directly with the hut by email or phone, particularly for weekends and July–August when the ridge attracts numerous hikers. Winter ascents are possible but require alpine experience and avalanche awareness. The hut lies close to the Swiss–Austrian border; ensure your travel documents are in order. Access in bad weather can be exposed along the ridge approach—turn back if visibility drops or lightning threatens.
