Mahdberg-Alpe

Mahdberg-Alpe sits at 1825m in the Säntis region of eastern Switzerland, accessible by hiking from multiple trailheads in the Appenzell Alps. The most direct approach is from Meglisalp (1517m), a 90-minute climb through steep alpine meadows. You can reach Meglisalp by cable car from Wasserauen in the Appenzell Alps. The hut works as a day-stop between longer ridge walks or as a base for exploring the rolling terrain around Säntis (2502m) to the north.
The Mahdberg-Alpe is a working alpine dairy producing cheese through summer months, with simple accommodation and a restaurant serving traditional Appenzell food. The hut has around 30 beds split between dormitories and a few private rooms. Full meals and packed lunches are available, but facilities are basic—expect squat toilets and limited hot water. It operates from May through October, with peak season mid-June to mid-September. In summer, the alp focuses on dairy production, so the atmosphere is working farm rather than tourist hut.
Book directly by phone or email. July and August fill quickly, especially weekends; book at least 4 weeks ahead for these months. June, September, and October are quieter. The hut closes for winter but occasionally opens for groups by arrangement. Arrive by mid-afternoon to secure beds during peak season. A car park serves day hikers at Wasserauen, though the cable car makes hiking access simpler than driving.
