Altusrieder Hütte

Eastern Switzerland, Switzerland

About

Altusrieder Hütte stands at 2,293m in the Säntis massif, roughly 90 minutes' walk above Säntis (2,502m). Reach it from Appenzell or via the Säntis cable car and then descend slightly northwest. Most hikers approach from the Säntis summit in 45 minutes. The hut works as a base for ridgeline walks across the Appenzell Alps and offers straightforward access to neighboring peaks including Schäfler (2,335m) and Schwägalp. Ground is rocky and exposed at this elevation, so come prepared for weather shifts.

The SAC-managed hut has 50 beds split between a larger dorm room and smaller shared rooms. Meals focus on hearty fare: the kitchen serves dinner daily and breakfast, with packed lunches available if you order ahead. Water comes from a reliable spring. The hut opens year-round but operates with reduced staff in winter—contact ahead if you're visiting November to March. Toilet facilities are simple but functional. Cell reception is patchy. No hot shower, though washbasins are available.

Book 2–3 months ahead for June through September weekends, especially in school holidays. Contact the hut directly by phone (+41 71 798 11 96) or through the SAC website. You can pay cash or card. The hut sits on the main Appenzell Alps walking routes, so Friday to Sunday can be busy. Come midweek if you want quieter nights. October brings stable weather and fewer crowds.
