Baite Cìgola

Baite Cìgola sits at 1,874m in the Bergell Valley, above Soglio in the southern Swiss Alps near the Italian border. Reach it on foot from Soglio village (1,097m) via a steep trail through larch forest and alpine meadows—count on 2.5 to 3 hours. The approach gains 777m steadily but isn't technical. You can also access it from the Bondasca Valley to the west, though that route is longer. The hut makes a logical base for scrambles on Piz Badile (3,308m) and Piz Cengalo (3,369m), and serves as a waypoint on high routes through the range.

This is a small, simple refuge with 10 beds split across a few rooms. Meals are available when the guardian is present—expect hearty mountain food rather than restaurant service. Water comes from a spring. The toilet facilities are basic but functional. The hut opens mid-June through September; confirm dates before you go, as staffing can vary. Outside these months, it may be accessible as an unmanned emergency shelter.

July and August are busy; aim to arrive early in the day. This is a working hut rather than a tourist destination, so bring a headlamp, extra food, and realistic expectations about comfort.
