Refuge Caprari

Rifugio Caprari sits at 2,118m in the Orobie Alps of Lombardy, above the Val Brembana. Reach it from Carona in about 3 hours on foot, climbing steadily through woodland and meadow. The hut marks a natural stopping point for traverses in the range and sits within reach of several 2,800m+ peaks. The approach is well-marked but steep in sections—allow 4 hours down if you're carrying a heavy pack.
The refuge is small and simple, with 12 beds spread across basic dormitory rooms. The guardian provides meals if you book ahead: expect hearty soups, pasta, and local cheese. Water comes from a spring, and there are flush toilets. The hut operates year-round but verify conditions in winter—snow can cut off foot access. Staff speak Italian and some German; English is limited.
Book directly by phone with CAI Sondrio well ahead if you're visiting July or August. Spring and autumn see fewer visitors and allow more flexible booking. The hut is run on a volunteer basis, so patience with response times is necessary. Bring cash; card payments may not be accepted. This is a working mountaineer's refuge, not a resort—expect comfortable enough facilities but no frills.
