Darmstädter Hut

Darmstädter Hut sits at 2,384m in the Prättigau valley, southeast of Feldkirch in eastern Graubünden. Reach it from Bad Ragaz via the Tamina gorge and Voralp (around 4.5 hours on foot), or from the Appenzell Alps via Säntis and the ridge route south (6–7 hours). Most hikers approach from the Voralp side, which is steeper but direct. The hut serves as a base for traversing the high ridge that separates Graubünden from northeastern Switzerland.

The hut offers 60 beds across multiple dormitory rooms and a few private spaces. The kitchen serves three meals daily, with evening menus built around hearty meat and vegetable dishes. Shower facilities are available, though there is no WiFi. The hut operates year-round but is quieter from November through March. Summer months (July–August) see heavy foot traffic, particularly from multiday trekkers on ridge routes.

Book directly by email or phone as soon as your travel dates are confirmed. July and August require booking at least 6–8 weeks ahead. Phone contact is faster for last-minute enquiries or group reservations. Half-board (bed, breakfast, and dinner) is standard, though packed lunches can be arranged. The hut is cash-friendly but increasingly accepts cards. Arrive by early afternoon if walking from Voralp; the final approach is exposed and becomes unpleasant in poor visibility.
