Scheiben Alm

Scheiben Alm sits at 1,850m in the Prättigau valley, a working alpine dairy farm that welcomes hikers. The hut lies on the main route between Schiers and the Säntis massif. From Schiers village, allow 2 hours to reach the alm on well-marked paths. The route gains 900m steadily through forest and open pasture. In summer, you can also approach from Gamperen to the east in 3 hours across rolling meadows.

The alm operates as a simple mountain restaurant with basic overnight accommodation. Expect around 20 beds in dormitory-style rooms with basic facilities. Meals focus on traditional mountain fare—älplermagronen, schnitzel, and fresh dairy products from their own cows. Water and toilets are available. The season runs mid-May through mid-October, weather permitting. This is a working farm first, hut second, so don't expect hotel amenities. The setting is genuinely pastoral: you'll likely see cattle grazing around the buildings.

Contact the hut directly by phone to book beds. They don't maintain online reservations. Weekends in July and August fill quickly—call at least 2 weeks ahead for Saturday nights. Weekday visits are easier to arrange last-minute. The alm closes during heavy snow and mud seasons, so confirm opening dates before travelling in May or October. Bring cash; card payment isn't reliable in this remote location.
