Emser Skihütte

Emser Skihütte sits at 1,940m in the Prättigau valley, a straightforward base for hiking in the eastern Appenzell Alps. The hut lies east of Engi, above the small settlement of Emsigen. Reach it on foot from Engi in roughly 1.5 hours via a well-marked trail that climbs through mixed forest and alpine meadow. The route is moderate and never steep. Summer access is also possible from Sämtis (2,228m) to the south, a ridge walk of about 2 hours suitable for fit hikers.
The hut is run on modest lines and operates year-round. It sleeps around 40 people in mixed dormitory accommodation. A full kitchen produces hot meals and basic packed lunches. The hut has reliable water and electricity. Cell coverage is poor but phone calls often work. Winter sees occasional skiers, but summer hiking dominates use. The setting is open and exposed—expect wind in bad weather.
Book directly through the hut keeper. Phone numbers and email are essential since the hut has no online booking system. July and August fill quickly if the weather looks good; book 4-6 weeks ahead. June and September are quieter. Winter weekends attract ski tourers from lower valleys. The hut is a working operation, not a tourist facility, and the keeper values advance notice of group arrivals.
