Refuge Baitone

Rifugio Baitone stands at 2,281m in the Valmalenco region of the Lombardy Alps, near the Pizzo Bernina massif. Reach it from the village of San Giuseppe in about 2.5 hours on foot, following the Mallero Valley trail—a well-marked path with steady elevation gain through larch and spruce forest. The hut sits at the junction of several multi-day routes, making it a natural hub for traverses into the Masino-Bregaglia group or circuits around Pizzo Bernina.
The refuge holds 90 beds in mixed dormitories. Meals follow Italian Alpine tradition: hot dinner and breakfast included with your stay. The kitchen runs evening meals from 19:00 to 20:00. Water comes from mountain springs. The hut operates year-round, though expect reduced services and staff November to April. Winter access requires mountaineering skills and may involve snowshoeing; confirm conditions before departure. Solar panels and a small generator provide power, so charging options are limited—bring a power bank if you need it.
