Refuge Budec

Rifugio Budec sits at 1,322m in the Val Budec, accessible from the village of Sonogno in the Ticino Alps. The approach takes 2.5 hours on foot from Sonogno, gaining roughly 400m elevation through mixed forest. The trail is well-marked and suitable for anyone with basic hill-walking experience. Most visitors combine a stay here with day walks into the surrounding valleys and peaks, or use it as a stopover on longer traverse routes through the southern Swiss Alps.

The refuge operates year-round and sleeps 26 guests in simple dormitory accommodation. Meals are available on request—expect hearty Italian-influenced cuisine reflecting the Ticinese location. Water comes from a spring. The hut has basic facilities: no showers, but washing is possible. Mobile signal can be unreliable, so plan accordingly. The setting is quiet and far from crowds, with direct access to high pastures and ridge walks above the valley.

Booking is by phone only. Contact the hut directly to reserve beds and confirm meal availability. July and August are busiest; book at least 4 weeks ahead for these months. Spring and autumn offer better solitude and are equally rewarding seasons. The hut closes only briefly during winter storms, making it a reliable destination for off-season hikers seeking an alternative to the busier northern huts.
