Refuge Elena Tironi

Rifugio Elena Tironi sits at 1,710m in the Lepontine Alps on the Swiss-Italian border. Reach it from Nufenen Pass (2,478m) via a 2.5-hour descent southwest toward the Val Bavona, or from Robiei dam in the Bavona valley via a 1.5-hour ascent through larch forest. The hut serves as a straightforward waypoint on longer valley traverses rather than a destination summit push. Most visitors approach from the Bavona side during summer when the high-altitude access road is open.
The refuge operates as a simple mountain hut with 22 beds in small dormitories. The manager serves filling home-cooked meals and basic provisions. There is a water source on-site. Accommodation is basic but dry. The hut typically opens from June through September, depending on snow conditions and weather access from higher elevations. Check opening dates before planning.
Contact the hut directly by phone to book, especially for weekends June through August when space fills quickly. Expect to call several times if lines are busy. Book at least two weeks ahead for summer weekends; four weeks is safer for July and August. The hut sits on a secondary route so it rarely reaches the overcrowding of major SAC huts, but availability still tightens during school holidays and good-weather weekends. Winter access is unreliable.
