Refuge Gianpace

Rifugio Gianpace sits at 1,331m on the south-facing slopes of the Val d'Aosta, in the heart of the Walser valley. You reach the hut on foot from the village of Macugnaga in around 2 hours. The approach follows a clear trail through mixed woodland and open pasture, gaining 500m steadily but without steep sections. This is legitimate hiking terrain, not a stroll, so bring proper boots and expect afternoon thunderstorms in summer.

The refuge operates as a small, working mountain hut rather than a purpose-built lodge. It offers around 30 beds in simple dormitories and a handful of doubles. The kitchen serves hearty valley food at breakfast and dinner. Water comes from the spring—reliable year-round. The building has basic heating and lighting but no showers. The toilet facilities are outdoors. Open mid-June through September, depending on snowmelt and the managers' schedule. This hut suits hikers wanting to base themselves for day walks in the upper Walser valleys or as a sleep stop on longer traverses towards the Rosa Glacier area.

Contact the hut directly by phone to check current opening dates and book beds, especially in July and August when it fills quickly. Expect to arrive by 5pm and confirm your dinner order when you book. The hut prefers cash payment, though this should be confirmed in advance.
