Refuge Carate Brianza

Rifugio Carate Brianza sits at 2,636m in the Albula Alps of Graubünden, above the Val Careser. Reach it from the village of Preda via the Albula Pass road—park near the pass and hike 2.5 hours up the southern slopes. The terrain is steep and exposed; bring a map and compass. The hut is usually approached from the Preda side, though experienced alpinists use it as a base for ski touring and climbing objectives on surrounding peaks.
The refuge holds 24 beds in shared dormitories. The Italian Alpine Club (CAI) manages it as a simple, working mountain shelter rather than a tourist lodge. Meals are available for residents; bring cash as card payments are unreliable at this elevation. Water comes from snowmelt. The hut operates June through September, closing during winter months and shoulder seasons. Conditions above 2,500m shift fast—check weather before departing and bring adequate layers regardless of forecast.
Contact the hut directly by email or phone to reserve beds. The refuge accepts bookings up to three months in advance. July and August fill quickly, especially weekends; book at least six weeks ahead for these months. In June and September, you often have availability with a week's notice. The hut does not maintain a website, so telephone confirmation is essential before making the journey from Preda.
