Refuge Malga di Mezzo

Refuge Malga di Mezzo sits at 1,950m in the Lagorai range of Trentino, in the Italian-speaking Alps south of the Val di Fassa. The hut is accessible from multiple directions: from the valley floor at Cavalese, allow 4–5 hours via the Passo della Consigliazione route; from Passo Rolle to the east, it takes 2–3 hours across high meadows. The refuge makes an excellent base for traversing this quieter corner of the Dolomites, well away from the main tourist corridors.
The hut offers simple accommodation in dormitory-style rooms with 30–40 beds total. Meals are hearty and straightforward—expect regional pasta, cheese, and meat dishes. The kitchen provides hot water for flasks, and there's a small bar. Facilities include pit toilets and basic washing areas; there is no electricity or running water beyond what's needed for cooking. The refuge operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and requires mountaineering skills. Summer (June to September) sees the most traffic, particularly in July and August when the high meadows around the hut are at their best for hiking.
Book directly by email or phone at least 2–3 weeks ahead during summer months. For July and August, give 4–6 weeks' notice. The hut fills quickly on weekends and during Italian school holidays. If you arrive without a reservation, call ahead the afternoon before to check availability. Payment is by cash only—bring euros, as the nearest ATM is in Cavalese.
