Refuge SAC Lungacqua Saoseo

Rifugio SAC Lungacqua Saoseo sits at 1,985m in the Val da Saoseo, a remote valley in the Bergell region of eastern Graubünden. The hut is reached from Vicosoprano (the nearest village with road access) via a 2.5-hour hike up the valley floor, gaining roughly 400m. The approach is straightforward but exposed to weather—check conditions before heading up. From the hut, you can access peaks and passes in the southern Albula Alps, including routes toward Piz Qualm and the high meadows above the valley.
The refuge operates year-round and accommodates 80 people in mixed dormitories and a few double rooms. SAC runs a kitchen serving hot meals (book meals when you reserve); the hut also has a self-catering kitchen if you bring your own food. Water is available from the tap. There's no electricity beyond basic lighting, and the hut has an austere, working feel typical of remote SAC refuges. Cell coverage is unreliable. The warden's family has managed the hut for decades and knows the valley intimately.
Book directly by email or phone as far ahead as possible—this is a popular base for walkers in the Bergell, particularly in July and August. The hut fills weekends during summer. Winter access is possible but demands mountain experience and avalanche awareness; confirm conditions with the warden before attempting a winter visit.
