Jamtalhütte

Jamtalhütte sits at 2,161m in the Jamtal valley, a remote corner of southern Graubünden near the Austrian border. Reach it from Galtür in Austria (1 hour 45 minutes by car, then 3 hours on foot) or from the Swiss side via Guarda in the Schanfigg valley (90 minutes drive, then 3 hours hiking). The hut is the base for accessing peaks including Piz Buin (3,312m) and traversing to Silvretta huts. Most hikers approach from Galtür because the Swiss approach involves more climbing and is less direct.
Jamtalhütte is a SAC/CAS hut with 60 bed places in a mix of dormitories and smaller rooms. Meals include dinner and breakfast; pack lunch is available. The hut has showers—a rarity at this elevation—plus a small restaurant. Full-board pricing is standard. The hut operates year-round but sees minimal winter traffic; spring to autumn (June through September) is busy. Staffing is lighter in winter, so confirm ahead if planning an off-season visit.
Book directly by phone with the hut well ahead for July and August. Easter week and September weekends fill quickly too. Expect a long-distance call to Austria—the hut number is Austrian. For summer weekend visits, book 2–3 months ahead. The hut's Austrian location means Swiss hut apps may not list it thoroughly; phone contact is the most reliable method.
