Alpe Nuovo

Alpe Nuovo sits at 1205m on the south side of the Alps in Ticino, in the Monte Nara massif near the Swiss-Italian border. The hut is reached from Bosco Gurin—a village of German-speaking settlements unique to the region—via the Nara pasture trail. Allow 2 hours hiking from the village to reach the hut. Access is on foot only; there is no vehicle road. The surrounding terrain is open pasture with views toward the Valle Maggia and the foothills descending into Italy.
Alpe Nuovo has 13 beds spread across basic dormitory rooms. The hut offers simple meals including evening dinner and morning breakfast. There is no WiFi. Water comes from a spring. The hut operates year-round but is most reliably staffed in summer and autumn. Winter visits should be confirmed in advance with the CAI section managing the hut. The setting suits hikers doing multiday traverses across the south-facing slopes of Ticino or day hikes into the Monte Nara area, which has less crowding than better-known Alpine valleys to the north.

The hut fills quickly during July and August; aim to book 4–6 weeks ahead for peak season. May, June, and September–October offer better availability and are better months for hiking in Ticino's lower elevations, which can be oppressively hot in midsummer.
