Refuge Gran Baita CAI Omegna

Rifugio Gran Baita sits at 1405m on the slopes above Omegna in Ticino's Verbano region. You reach it from Omegna village (on Lake Verbano) in roughly 2.5 hours on foot via marked trails through beech and chestnut forest. The hut serves as a base for day hikes across the ridges and peaks of the southern Ticino Alps, with routes to Mottarone (1,491m) and connections to the broader network of Ticino trails. The setting is open, grassy terrain rather than high alpine.
The CAI manages this small refuge with 18 beds split across dormitory rooms. They serve meals from a simple kitchen—expect pasta, polenta, and local cooking rather than fine dining. Water is available. The hut opens year-round but operates on a caretaker basis outside peak season, so winter visits need advance notice.
