Cabin Bovarina

Capanna Bovarina sits at 1,870m in the Val Bavona, deep in the Ticino Alps south of the Gotthard. Reach it from Fontana on the valley floor: allow 2.5 hours of steady hiking gaining 900m through mixed forest and meadow. The hut is also accessible from Robiei (2,261m) on the Nufenen Pass road—a 1.5-hour descent if you're working a pass traverse. Most hikers approach from the valley below.
The hut sleeps 40 across shared dorms and offers cooked meals and drinks; there is no self-catering kitchen. Water comes from a reliable mountain source. Capanna Bovarina works well as a base for day walks or as an overnight stop on longer Ticino itineraries. The hut operates year-round but confirm opening in winter before travel. It's a working mountain hut, not a resort—expect straightforward hospitality and fuel-efficient heating.

Phone ahead if you need a guaranteed bed, particularly in summer. Late afternoon arrivals are common and usually welcome if space exists.
