About
Läntahütte sits at 2090m on the border between Ticino and Uri, above the Val Leventina. Most hikers reach it via the Gotthard Pass (2106m)—a 2.5-hour walk from Hospental on the Gotthard road. You can also approach from Airolo in 4 hours via the Oberalp Pass area, or from various points in the Ursern valley. The hut works as a basecamp for day walks across the high plateaus and peaks in this quieter corner of the Uri Alps.
The SAC-run hut has 33 beds split across several rooms, mostly in dormitories. Half-board and full-board meals are served daily. There's a self-catering kitchen if you want flexibility, and reliable drinking water from the spring. WiFi is available, though don't expect blazing speeds at 2090m. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on snow conditions and your own winter mountaineering skills. Summer sees regular traffic from hikers doing Gotthard crossings or circular routes through the Ursern.
Book directly by email or phone—aim for at least 2 weeks ahead in July and August, or during Easter and Whitsun holidays. Outside peak season, the hut rarely fills. Phone ahead in winter to confirm the hut is staffed and accessible. The location makes it genuinely useful for Alpine crossing routes rather than a destination in itself.
