Refuge Alpe Basciarino

Rifugio Alpe Basciarino sits at 1,280m in the Val Blenio region of Ticino, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The hut lies on the Franciscan pilgrimage route and serves as a base for approaches to Monte Basciarino and access to the Gotthard passes. Reach it from Olivone (30km south of Gotthard Pass) via a 3 to 4-hour hike through Alpine meadows and larch forests. The approach is steady rather than technical, making it suitable for fit hikers with basic mountain experience.
The refuge accommodates 12 guests in mixed dormitory-style rooms. The warden provides hot meals and breakfast. Water comes from a spring near the hut. The building is simple and functional—expect basic Alpine shelter, not hotel comfort. The hut opens year-round but is most reliably staffed during summer and autumn. Winter visits require advance notice and confirmation of occupancy. Cell phone reception is unreliable; plan accordingly if you need to contact the hut during your approach.
