Refuge Mottafoiada

Rifugio Mottafoiada sits at 1,325m on the southern slopes of the Lepontine Alps in Ticino, Switzerland. Reach it from Nivo in the Maggia Valley via a steady 2-hour hike through chestnut and mixed forest. The route gains 400m elevation and follows marked trails through open meadows as you climb. Public transport reaches Nivo by PostBus from Locarno. The hut also connects to trails leading toward Robiei and higher alpine terrain.
The refuge offers 20 beds in simple shared rooms. Meals are available from the hut restaurant—book dinner ahead during busy weekends. A small shop stocks basic supplies. Water and toilet facilities are reliable. The hut operates year-round, though weekend service is more reliable than weekdays in winter. This is a working agricultural refuge, not a high-altitude alpine hut, so expect modest comfort rather than luxury.
