Refuge Garzirola

Rifugio Garzirola sits at 1974m on the ridge between Valle di Blenio and Valle Leventina in southern Ticino. Reach it from Acquarossa in Valle di Blenio: hike 2.5 hours via the Alpe di Naccio trail, which climbs steadily through larch forest and opens onto alpine meadow. From Pian Nascio (accessible by car) the approach takes 1.5 hours and is less steep. The ridge position gives you views south into Italy and north toward the higher Ticino peaks. The hut also connects to longer traverses linking Rifugio Cambrils and other huts in the region.
The rifugio is small and simple, with around 30 beds split between dormitory and a few double rooms. Meals focus on hearty regional cooking—expect polenta, risotto, and local cheese. The kitchen provides packed lunches if you're moving on early. Water comes from a spring; there's no shower. The hut operates June through September and sees most traffic in July and August. Weekends fill up regularly but midweek is quieter outside peak season.
Book directly by phone or email as far ahead as possible during summer. July is the busiest month. The hut accepts cash and card payments. Staff speak Italian, German, and some English. Arrive by early afternoon to secure a place at dinner and enjoy the evening light on the ridge.
