Refuge Sora Casari

Rifugio Sora Casari sits at 1,660m in the Ticino Alps, on the border between Switzerland and Italy. The hut anchors routes through the Val Verzasca and the surrounding granite peaks. Most hikers approach from Sonogno (1,200m) via the Val Verzasca trail, a 2.5-hour ascent through mixed forest and open meadow. From Airolo (1,175m) on the north side, the approach is steeper and less direct. Both routes are straightforward hiking without scrambling.
The SAC-managed refuge, run by Fulvio Casari, has 25 beds in dormitory rooms. The kitchen serves hot meals at dinner and breakfast, with packed lunches available on request. Water comes from a spring on the premises. The hut is open year-round, though winter access depends entirely on snow conditions and your mountain skills. Expect basic but solid Alpine hut conditions—no showers, minimal heating, pit toilet.
Book by phone directly with the hut keeper to confirm availability and meals. July and August fill quickly; reserve at least 6-8 weeks ahead for these months. Outside summer, a week's notice is usually sufficient. Winter visits require contacting the keeper in advance to check if the hut is accessible and stocked. Expect to pay cash on arrival—confirm payment methods when you call.
