Dammahütte SAC

Dammahütte sits at 2,439m in the Uri Alps, accessed from the Gotthard Pass region. The standard approach is from Hospenthal, a 4-hour hike gaining 1,200m via the Dammagletscher valley. The hut works as a base for traverses toward the Oberalppass and Furka Pass, connecting it to larger valley hikes across central Switzerland. Winter access is severely limited; the route is snowbound from November through May.
The SAC-managed hut sleeps 20 across simple shared dormitories. Meals are provided by the wardens during the operating season, or you can cook in the self-catering kitchen. Water comes from the mountain source. The hut operates from June through October, opening earlier or closing later depending on snow conditions. No shower; expect basic mountain accommodation. The location makes it useful for climbers approaching surrounding peaks, though it's equally popular with long-distance hikers.
Book at least 6 weeks ahead for July and August weekends. Contact the hut by email or phone to confirm availability and meal preferences. Arrive by mid-afternoon if you've walked from Hospenthal, as the last light fades quickly in the valley. July and August are busiest; June and September offer better chances of availability and quieter conditions.
