Baltschiederklause

Baltschiederklause sits at 2783m in the Baltschieder Valley, a side valley off the Saas Valley in Valais. Reach it from Saas-Grund (1559m) by hiking up the valley for roughly 4.5 hours. The trail is well-marked and gains elevation steadily through alpine meadows before entering rockier terrain near the hut. You can also approach from the Simplon Pass area if you're on a longer traverse. The hut serves as a base for peaks in the Balfrin and Weissmies massifs.
Baltschiederklause is a SAC-managed hut with around 60 beds split between dormitories and a few smaller rooms. The hut opens mid-June and typically closes mid-October, though this varies with snow conditions. Staff serve dinner and breakfast. The hut has a small dining room, outdoor seating, and basic facilities including running water and pit toilets—expect alpine hut conditions, not hotel comfort. Mobile reception is poor or absent.
Book directly with the hut by phone or email, preferably 2-3 weeks ahead for weekends or July-August. The hut is quieter on weekdays. They accept cash and some card payments but confirm payment methods when you book. Arriving early in the day is wise as water sources are limited nearby and the hut has no shower facilities.
