About

Stockhorn-Bivouac sits at 2598m on the Stockhorn, a rocky summit between the Blümlisalp massif and the Oeschinen Lake basin in the Bernese Oberland. Reach it from Oeschinen (1396m) via the Oeschinen Lake in 4–5 hours on foot. The final section is steep and rocky scrambling. From Blümlisalp Hut you can traverse to Stockhorn in 2–3 hours across mixed terrain. Winter access requires ski mountaineering experience. The hut marks a natural waypoint on traverses linking the Blümlisalp group with the Lötschental and Oeschinen Lake circuits.
The bivouac is a basic shelter run by SAC Blümlisalp with 18 beds in shared dormitory space. There is a self-catering kitchen with a stove and drinking water sourced on-site. Bring all your own food. No meals or warden are provided. The hut is unheated and exposed; bring warm layers even in summer. Open year-round but only suitable for winter mountaineers with avalanche and navigation skills outside the summer months. The shelter is a rough stone building—expect minimal comfort but reliable shelter from the elements.
Book via SAC Blümlisalp or the SAC website. Space fills quickly for July and August; contact the custodian at least 4 weeks ahead for peak season. Bring cash for any fees. The hut operates on an honour system out of season. Do not rely on this site as your only shelter in poor weather—it is exposed and emergency descent to Oeschinen Lake takes time.
