Britanniahütte

Britanniahütte stands at 3,030m in the Valais Alps, on the south side of the Säckingen Pass between the Wallis and Uri valleys. The standard approach climbs from Hospental (1,450m) in roughly 4.5 hours, gaining 1,580m on a well-marked path. The hut also sits on the route from Andermatt via the Gotthard Pass if you're traversing the region. Snow closes the access route from October through May most years, so plan accordingly.

The hut sleeps 101 across shared dorms. Evening meals and packed lunches are available—book these when you reserve beds. A self-catering kitchen serves those who prefer to cook. Water is piped in from the mountain. There's no WiFi. The hut typically opens from late June through mid-September, though the exact dates depend on snow conditions. The facilities are straightforward mountain accommodation, designed for hikers and mountaineers moving through the high passes.

Book well ahead for July and August—6 to 8 weeks is standard. Contact the hut directly by email or phone. The hut fills quickly during the main season, especially at weekends and during the school holidays in the second half of July. Outside peak season (June and September), booking a few weeks ahead usually works. Arrive by early afternoon if you're collecting a reserved meal, as kitchen service winds down in late afternoon.
