Great St Bernard Hospice

The Great St Bernard Hospice sits at 2,470m on the Swiss-Italian border, accessible from both the Swiss and Italian sides of the pass. From Bourg-Saint-Pierre on the Swiss side, the hike takes 5–6 hours via a well-marked trail that gains 1,100m elevation. From Italy, the approach from Aosta is longer and steeper. The hospice is also reachable by vehicle via the Great St Bernard Pass road (closed mid-October to mid-June). The location offers direct access to high-altitude terrain: Mont Velan (3,727m) is a challenging scramble, and numerous glacier crossings and peaks lie within day-trip range.
The hospice provides 104 beds across dormitory and private rooms. Half-board meals are available and include substantial mountain cooking—expect hearty soups, pasta, and local cheese. The kitchen caters well to vegetarian diets if requested in advance. Winter heating and facilities are basic but functional. The hut operates year-round, though winter access depends on road conditions and weather. Note that the hospice remains an active monastery with a small community of canons; guests share the space respectfully.
Book directly by phone for bed availability. Summer (July-August) fills 4–6 weeks ahead. Spring and autumn have more flexibility. Winter bookings require confirmation of pass road status. The hospice accepts cash and card payments. Arrive by early afternoon to secure meals and settle in before dark, especially on shorter daylight days.
