Refuge Pier Giorgio Frassati

Rifugio Pier Giorgio Frassati stands at 2,560m in the Pennine Alps, accessible from the Val d'Ayas on the Italian side of the border. The standard approach is from Champoluc (1,568m), which takes 4–5 hours via the Sentiero dei Camosci trail. Alternative access from Gressoney-La-Trinité takes 5–6 hours. The hut sits on a key crossing point between valleys, making it useful for multi-day traverses across the massif.
The refuge accommodates around 60 people in dormitory beds. Meals are served daily when staffed, with basic supplies available. The hut has no shower facilities but provides washbasins and toilets. Open from late May through September, it operates as a staffed facility during summer months. Winter access is sporadic and depends on snow conditions and staffing decisions—check before attempting off-season visits.
Book by phone directly with the hut. July and August fill quickly, especially mid-week when guided groups book blocks of beds. June and early September offer better availability. Arrive by mid-afternoon if you haven't reserved, though don't assume beds will be available during peak season. The hut operates under Italian Alpine Club (CAI) management.
