Refuge de Doran

Refuge de Doran sits at 1495m in the Jura Mountains, reachable from the village of Doran via a straightforward 45-minute walk through mixed forest. The hut serves as a base for exploring the limestone plateaus and ridges that characterize this region. Access is possible year-round on foot, though snow can make the final approach challenging between December and March.
The refuge is a simple affair: a small building with 20 beds across dormitory rooms, a dining area, and basic ablutions. Meals focus on hearty mountain food cooked on-site. There is no electricity; lighting is by gas lamp and heating by wood stove. The hut operates year-round, though staff presence and meal availability are limited outside summer weekends. Water comes from a spring nearby. The hut does not serve as a stopping point on a major Alpine route, so it remains quiet even during peak season.
Book directly by phone or email at least one week ahead, longer if you're planning a weekend visit in July or August. The hut takes walk-ins when staffed, but this is unreliable. Credit cards are not accepted; bring cash in Swiss francs. Expect to pay around 30 CHF for a bed and 15–20 CHF for a simple evening meal. This is a refuge for people who value simplicity and solitude over comfort or facilities. The Jura offers excellent ski touring and summer hiking, and Doran makes a good base for multiday trips in the region.
