Refuge de Varan

Refuge de Varan sits at 1,620m in the French Alps near the Swiss border. The hut serves as a base for hiking in the Varan valley and connects to trails leading toward higher alpine terrain. Most hikers reach it from the valley floor in 2–3 hours on well-marked paths. The location puts you within striking distance of cols and peaks across the region.
The refuge accommodates 28 people in dorm and private rooms. Meals are available—the kitchen serves dinner and breakfast to guests staying overnight. Water comes from the spring; there is no shower. The hut operates year-round but sees heaviest use May through September. Winter access depends on snow conditions and should be confirmed ahead of time.
Book directly by email or phone as soon as your dates are fixed. July and August fill quickly—aim to reserve at least 4–6 weeks ahead for summer months. Shoulder seasons (May, June, September, October) are more flexible. Half-board (bed plus dinner and breakfast) is the standard arrangement, though you can often arrange bed-only if you prefer to cook or bring your own food. Call ahead if you have dietary requirements.
