Refuge de la Barmaz

Refuge de la Barmaz sits at 2,460m in the Valais Alps, accessed from the valley via the Col de la Barmaz pass. Most hikers reach it from Arolla in roughly 4 hours, climbing steadily through alpine meadows and rocky terrain. The hut marks a natural stopping point on longer traverses across the region, with onward routes to Mont-Collon and surrounding peaks. Winter access is limited or impossible depending on snow conditions—check locally before planning a winter visit.

The refuge offers basic mountain accommodation with dormitory beds and a small number of private rooms. Meals are prepared daily and advance notice is required for special dietary needs. Water comes from mountain sources; the hut has no shower facilities but provides washbasins. The season typically runs from June through September, though shoulder months depend on snow levels and staffing. The SAC/CAS manages the hut and maintains it as a working mountain facility rather than a luxury base.

Book directly by phone at least 2 weeks ahead during peak season (July and August). July weekends fill quickly—aim for 4-6 weeks in advance if you're targeting those dates. The refuge operates on a first-come, first-served basis outside peak periods. Confirm opening dates before traveling, as early-season snow can delay access or staffing. Payment is cash on arrival; bring Swiss francs as card facilities are unreliable at this elevation.
