About
Rifugio Aosta sits at 2,785m in the upper Valais Alps, on the north side of the Tête Blanche massif. You reach it in 3 hours from Arolla, climbing steadily through alpine meadows and scree. The approach is well-marked but exposed in the final section—snow lingers into July some years. In the opposite direction, most hikers continue to Dent Blanche hut (4 hours) or descend toward Ferpècle valley.
The refuge manages 30 beds in a straightforward mountain setup. Meals are basic but hearty: dinner, breakfast, and lunch packs available. There's no running water at the hut itself—you collect meltwater from nearby. The toilet is outside. The guardian runs the hut from mid-June through September; shoulder months depend on snow conditions. Summer nights get cold even in July. Bring a sleeping bag liner or rent bedding.
Contact the hut directly by phone to book. Call ahead in the week before arrival if you're arriving without a reservation—beds fill during July and August, particularly Thursday through Sunday. June and September offer quieter conditions and are reliable weather windows. Plan to carry your own water if the nearby source is frozen or dry.
