Refuge Cesare Dalmazzi

Rifugio Cesare Dalmazzi stands at 2,584m on the border between Italy and Switzerland in the Gran Paradiso massif. Reach it from Ceresole Reale in the Orco Valley, a steep 2.5-hour hike gaining 900m through meadows and rocky terrain. The trail is well-marked but relentless; start early to avoid afternoon crowds and weather. Most parties approach via the Pianura meadows route, which is the most direct line to the hut.
The refuge operates as a manned base camp for mountaineers tackling Gran Paradiso (4,061m) and adjacent peaks. It sleeps around 40 people in mixed dormitories and has a small number of private rooms. Meals are substantial—expect traditional Italian mountain food and good coffee. Hot showers require advance notice. The hut opens June through September, depending on snow conditions; call ahead in early season. Winter access is rare and requires mountaineering skills.
